About the prices

Where do these prices come from?

Livestock and hay prices are from USDA Agricultural Marketing Service Market News reports. Market News reporters cover each sale and USDA publishes the results. Custom farming rates are from university extension surveys. Every table names its report and the date it was retrieved.

What does "per cwt" mean?

Hundredweight, or 100 pounds. A price of $300 per cwt on a 500 lb calf is $1,500 per head.

What is a weighted average price?

The average price of the head sold in that line, weighted by the number of head in each lot. USDA calculates and publishes it; this site shows USDA's figure.

How often are prices updated?

The site checks USDA for each report several times a day. Most barns sell weekly, so most reports change once a week.
