Questions

About cattle prices

What does Medium and Large 1 mean?

Feeder cattle frame size and muscle grade. Medium and Large frame, muscle score 1, is the most common USDA feeder grade and the line most buyers compare.

What does per cwt mean?

Hundredweight, or 100 pounds. Multiply the price by the weight and divide by 100 to get dollars per head.

What are receipts?

The number of head USDA counted at the sale. Week-ago and year-ago receipts are given when USDA reports them.

What do lean, boning and breaker mean for cows?

Slaughter cow classes by fat cover and yield. Breakers are fattest, boners average, lean cows thinnest. Dressing percentages (low, average, high) are given per line.
