Questions

About sheep and goats prices

What does Selection 1, 2 and 3 mean for goats?

USDA meat goat selection grades. Selection 1 has superior meat type and thick muscling, Selection 2 average, Selection 3 inferior. Graded sales sort goats by these grades before the auction.

Are goat prices per head or per cwt?

Most are per hundredweight (100 lbs). Some lines, such as kids sold by the head or nannies with kids, are per head or per unit. Each table shows the unit USDA used.

What is a graded sale?

A sale where animals are sorted into lots by weight and grade before selling, so buyers bid on uniform groups.

How often do goat sales run?

Some barns sell sheep and goats weekly, others every other week or monthly. Each barn page lists past sale dates.
